Can You Paint 20 Year Old Vinyl Siding

For decades, vinyl siding has been a favorite of homeowners due to its durability, affordability, and low maintenance requirements. However, as the years go by, even the most resilient siding can lose its luster. If you’re wondering whether you can paint 20-year-old vinyl siding to revitalize your home’s exterior, you’re in the right place.

Can You Paint old Vinyl Siding?

Yes, painting old vinyl siding is possible, but there are a few important considerations to keep in mind. First, the condition of your siding matters. Painting can be a cost-efficient way to update its appearance if it’s in proper shape. However, if the siding is damaged or excessively worn, replace it. Additionally, it’s crucial to choose a comparable or lighter color than the original to avoid overheating and warping. Finally, using vinyl-safe exterior paint will yield the best results, ensuring a long-lasting finish.

A Brief History of Vinyl Siding

Introduced in the 1950s, vinyl siding was designed to offer a maintenance-free alternative to wood and aluminum. Initially praised for its durability and versatility, it quickly became a staple in American homes. One of its selling points was the promise of never needing a paint job—a promise that, while appealing, left some homeowners desiring more flexibility in their home’s appearance as trends evolved.

Why Paint Your Vinyl Siding?

Painting offers a viable solution if the color of your siding has faded or simply no longer suits your style. Not only can it enhance your home’s aesthetic appeal, but it can also increase its value. Before you pick up a paintbrush, weigh the pros and cons carefully.

Pros and Cons of Painting Vinyl Siding

Pros

Cost-Effective

Painting is significantly cheaper than replacing vinyl siding. A fresh coat can cover blemishes, making your home look new without breaking the bank.

Improved Appearance

A new color can breathe life into your home’s exterior, hiding imperfections and adding curb appeal.

Increased Durability

The right paint and application can enhance the siding’s resilience, protecting it from the elements.

Cons

Not Long-Lasting

While a fresh coat will rejuvenate your siding, it won’t last forever. Expect to repaint every five years or so.

Potential Warranty Issues

The warranty on your vinyl siding may still be valid. Painting it might void the coverage.

Risk of Damage

Improper application or the wrong paint can lead to fading, peeling, or warping.

Preparation is Key

Thorough preparation is crucial before you start painting. Whether or not you use a primer, ensure the siding is clean to guarantee proper adhesion. Wash it thoroughly with a recommended cleaning solution, removing dirt, grime, and mildew.

Color Considerations

When choosing a paint color, remember that vinyl siding products are engineered to handle varying degrees of heat absorption. To avoid potential warping, opt for a shade no darker than the original.

The Importance of Choosing the Right Paint

Selecting the appropriate paint is vital. Many paints are unsuitable for vinyl and can cause damage. Look for 100% acrylic paint designed specifically for vinyl siding, as it provides superior adhesion and durability.

Step-by-Step Guide to Painting Vinyl Siding

When choosing a paint color, remember that vinyl siding products are engineered to handle varying degrees of heat absorption. To avoid potential warping, opt for a shade no darker than the original.

Cover doors, windows, and other areas you don’t want painted with plastic sheeting and tape.

Step 3: Prime

Prime the siding if the surface is damaged or the color is peeling. Follow the manufacturer’s drying instructions before proceeding.

After moving into a new house, I needed to have the wallpaper removed from 3 rooms, 2 bathrooms, a downstairs and upstairs hallway, and also have the hallway painted. After getting a few quotes, I decided to use Desirable Painting since they had a lot of good reviews and reasonable pricing. The team was able to get started very quickly and did a great job working efficiently and with good quality. Their communication was also excellent with daily call aheads and regular check ins. Towards the end when I had some concerns about one of the areas, they also had someone spend a lot of additional time re-patching and re-sanding the walls to make sure to get it right. The only thing that could have been better was more communication/control around dust management. Since we were just moving in, we had a lot of boxes and stuff around, and most of it got really dusty. Had I known how bad it would be throughout the house I would have hung up plastic. Overall I would recommend using Desirable Paintings and would use them again for another project.

Great service, great prices. The representative who gave the estimates did not try to upsell anything and offered helpful solutions. The painter on site was extremely polite and professional. Went out of his way to make sure everything was perfect. For the amount of work that was done, I’m shocked at how low the price was.

Numerous excellent experiences with this great company. Eric is phenomenal to work with and I highly recommend. He will listen to your needs, give very fair pricing, and do the job so well. Everyone I know is really happy with his work. I’ve never heard one single negative thing about their services. Look no further!

I was disappointed to see Desirable Painting hanging advertisements on utility poles throughout Strongsville. This kind of posting is not only an eyesore, but it also appears to go against city ordinances regarding signage on public property. It shows a lack of professionalism and respect for the community and local rules. If a company is willing to ignore basic city regulations just to advertise, it makes me question how seriously they take other rules or standards. There are plenty of ways to market a business without cluttering public spaces or potentially violating local laws. I would not recommend a company that operates this way.

My new condo needed walls stripped of wallpaper and then freshly painted. My daughter found Desirable Companies online. I was MOST interested in wallpaper removal as I’ve tried to DIY that before and I know how difficult it can be, plus I have a vaulted wall and ceiling in one room. Eric came to my place and worked up an estimate, then a detailed quote. He was very thorough and professional, and friendly. Work started quickly and my house was soon transformed. Fred was my contracted workman. He was professional, cordial, and a relentless worker! He came everyday and worked every minute he was here. I felt safe with him here and trusted him implicitly when I had to leave the house. Long story, short…I couldn’t have asked for a better experience! The walls are beautiful, the mess is gone (he vacuumed up before he left) and I was left with touch up paint colors and a scratch repair stick for my woodwork. I highly recommend this company and its skilled workers for home repair and remodel! I would absolutely hire them again! Good luck to Eric and the crews.

The team at Desirable Painting and Floors really delivered! I hired them to paint a condo that I am renovating. They worked well with my other contractors to solidify the timing and then completed the entire project in just 4 days. We are already looking at more projects. Definitely 5 stars!!
